1999: Birth of the TRAM Metropolitano.

The first phase would stretch from Alicante-Benidorm-Altea, extending from the TRAM station FGV Alicante-Alicante to La Marina in Plaza del Mar, and the construction of a tunnel under the city center would connect Intermodal Station with the future high-speed rail near suburban buses and RENFE Operator. A new ramp to the neighborhoods of Albufereta, Cabo de las Huertas, and Playa de San Juan would be built.

The second phase includes a line from Altea to Denia and the creation of new branches to Terra Mitica and the center of Benidorm.

2002: Work on the Campello-Villajoyosa section of Line 1 is completed. Work on the Campello-Alicante stretch begins.

2003: Launch of the first tranche (Alicante-Campello on August 16), which placed Alicante as the fifth metropolitan area of Spain—after Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, and Valencia—in having a system of urban transport of modern and high capacity.

2006: Ends the first part of the tunnel through the center of the city, specifically running under the mountain, and ends Benacantil tentatively in the underground station market.

Is awarded to the Subus company, which manages the Metropolitan Transportation Alicante (TAM), the construction of Line 2 to the University of Alicante, and San Vicente del Raspeig.

Construction of the first tram stop is completed, located on the roundabout Sergio Cardell, called the same name as the developer—Subarchitecture—and was awarded at the IX Biennial of Spanish Architecture and Urbanism.

Construction of the future station of the section of the Plaza de los Luceros begins.

Work on the Villajoyosa-Benidorm stretch begins.

2007: The first operation in underground stations begins.

On May 10 the first section of the underground network and the first restructuring of the lines are inaugurated.

On June 15 the ramp between the L4 and Lucentum Avenue of Nations comes into operation.

On July 31 Line 3 lasts five seasons (Campello-Venta Lanuza) and opens Line 1, from Market to Creueta.

History of the Tram in Alicante

1914: Birth of the railway line Alicante-Altea

1916: Birth of the extension of the Altea-Denia line

1997: Due to the growing problems of mobility, urban growth, and population construction of a new urban transport system, metropolitan-based remodeling, and modernization of the railway are considered.

1999: Birth of the TRAM Metropolitano.

 

 

2008

On January 20 an announcement is made for the construction of a tunnel of 1470 m for the splitting of the track in the stretch to La Isleta Sangueta.

On February 7 it is announced that there will be an extension of Line 1 from the Intermodal Station to the Airport, on a route that would also support L2.

February 11 begins the digging of the tunnel between Luceros and ADIF Intermodal, with underground parking beneath a building that is linked to the tunnel line.

On June 2 the service of Line 1 (Mercado-Creueta) is extended to Benidorm, where passengers can transfer to trains for Altea/Denia. The frequency of these trains will be 60 minutes all day.

On November 2 construction of a new stop for Line 1,  between La Condomina and Costa Blanca in the Alicante Golf is awarded.
