Demographics

After a population decline after the phylloxera crisis of the early 20th century, the demographics of the municipality had a radical change thanks to the tourist boom of the 1960s. Its population grew from 12,185 inhabitants in 1960 to 30,693 in 2000 and 42,704 in 2007 within an area of 66.2 km˛.

According to the latest census, 29.7% of Denia’s population is of foreign nationality; of these, 59% comes from Europe (the area that stands out is Cologne Germany), 24.6% are from Latin America, and 10.1% are of non-European descent.

Business

The crisis from the early 20th century took its toll on the city’s economy. Since the 1960s tourism became the main industry in Denia, causing the demise of industries and rapid urbanization.
