After having been submitted as a candidate to host the World
University Games to be held in 2011 and not being chosen, it was announced that
Murcia
would be a candidate for 2013. The games are the second largest events after
the Olympics.
Finally, the application of Murcia
lost to the candidacy of Vigo,
as each country can take up to one city to the finals.
In February 2006 Ikea opened a store in Murcia, thus becoming the first one in all of Spain.
In June 2008 Murcia
opened the La Noria outlet, situated in the parish of La Nora. The people represent
a Mediterranean village, with its streets, plazas, fountains, gardens, etc. The
shops are located in fictional town houses.

The 51st World Figure Skating Championships was held from
November 27 to December 10.

Murcia 2001
From July 22 to July 26 of 2001, Murcia hosted the Sixth Conference
of the European Youth Olympics, which involved 2,500 young people under 18,
with athletes from 46 European countries competing in 10 different sports.
Murcia
was chosen by the European Olympic Committees in Stockholm in November 1997.
The inaugural ceremony was held at the Artillery Barracks on
June 22.

Shopping
Around the center of Murcia is the traditional core of
trade in the city, being able to find everything from small businesses to large
franchise brands. In addition, the municipality boasts five malls (Watchtower,
ZigZag, New Condomina, Thader, and La Noria Outlet) and three others under
construction: The Shooting (next to Terra Natura and Espinardo campus), The
Palm Citymur Thader, and Ikea Thader.

Football: The
main team in the city of Murcia
is the Real Murcia football club. Founded in 1908, it has militated 18 seasons
in the first division of the Spanish football league. The city has another
professional team, the Football Club City of Murcia, which was founded in 1999
and disappeared in 2007 and came to play in the second division.
