Primary Sector: Mainly consists of the crops that were already mentioned before. They are distributed mainly in the area of the parishes, except Orihuela Costa, which is more dedicated to the cultivation of dry types, such as the vine, almond, or olive. The existence of farms is Orihuela is quite small, but there are some fishing fleets.

Secondary Sector: Mostly in construction but also in the factories of the industrial estate. The building stands out for its large volume in the Orihuela Costa and city due to its large population but also in the garden and surrounding parishes of Orihuela City.

The shops of the city are grouped into two associations. Merchants Associations Orihuela Town History and the Merchants’ Association of the Orihuela Municipality are most common, with both partners having locations in Orihuela city and in the parishes and along the coast. The latter has two locations in one city and one on the coast.

The city has three shopping malls: Centro Comercial Eroski Orihuela, Centro Comercial Centro Comercial Hispania, and Ociopia. The city also has offices of many credit institutions like banks and Savings and Credit Cooperatives based in Orihuela, with major offices of the Savings Bank of the Mediterranean and the Fund Murcia Area Directorate (both from Elche to Murcia).

The city has its own savings bank, the Caja Rural Central, which is a credit union that serves customers in the provinces of Alicante, Murcia, Almeria, and Albacete, with a network of more than 80 offices.

Orihuela is a city based on the service sector and agriculture. Orihuela’s economy has traditionally been agriculture. First, there were cereal, vineyards, and olive trees in the Roman times.

After the Muslim invasion the crop was irrigated, especially oranges and lemons. These cultures were made with the introduction of the canal that still applies today and are still the main crops, along with other vegetables and tubers, such as potatoes or fruit trees (almonds).

Currently, the data shows that in Orihuela, around 9% of the population works in agriculture, 12% in the secondary sector, mainly in construction, and the remaining 79% of the population works in the tertiary sector.

In Orihuela Costa there are catering services, business, and leisure tourism thanks to the great beaches that attract Oriolanas, especially during the summer. There are six coast malls, including Mall La Zenia (Urb La Zenia II), Centro Comercial Rioja, Centro Comercial Punta Prima, La Campana Mall, Florida Mall, and Mall of Dols. New plans are in development for construction of a new shopping center in the large area of Campoamor, called Centro Comercial Las Playas.

Orihuela also has many public services that employ people such as the delegation of many public organizations like the Inland Revenue, Treasury of Social Security, the Institute of Social Security, the Courts, the Delegation of the Department of Agriculture, the Youth Institute of the Department of Social Welfare, and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Orihuela, which also has sites in the Playas de Orihuela. Being the capital of the region provides services to other populations in the region.

The bank was founded in 1919 by the Royal Order of the Ministry for the Promotion of July 9 and RO Ministry of Finance on October 27, 1919. This institution has an important social network in the city of Orihuela and in all municipalities of Vega Baja. Its headquarters and principal are located at the Palacio del Portillo in Orihuela.

In the past there was also the Savings Virgin of Montserrat, founded in 1906, but it merged with the Savings Bank of Pretel (which contributed 50 offices, bringing the Orihuela count to almost 100) to melt the Savings Mediterranean entity being merged were others such as the Savings Bank of Crevillente, the Ibiza etc.

The city has an industrial estate in this area, which borders the towns of Callosa and Redovan. This industrial park is named Puente Alto and hosts many food companies, carriers, and the fruit slice (one of the most important in Orihuela).

Also, there are several broad areas of industrial concentration in neighboring cities, following the route of national road Murcia-Alicante, from the neighborhood of Garden City to the Parish of Aparecida.

Tertiary or Service Sector: Mainly around Orihuela Costa and Orihuela Town. Orihuela Town is concentrated in the leisure sector (in the Mall Ociopia) to restore that focus on the historical center (although the restaurants can be found virtually throughout the municipality) and the related trade.

The latter is mainly around the old town, especially on the main street. There are also officials of the council, business, education, security (National Police Force, Local Police, and Guardia Civil), and health.

Furthermore, it was also the head office of Orihuela Bonanza Savings Bank, which was merged with the CAM by order of the government. In general, the economy is almost like any town near the coast of the province of Alicante
