In 2007 Orihuela was the fourth municipality in the province, with 80,468 inhabitants, and introducing a rapid growth since the 1990s.

The population is distributed among the 32,685 living in the historical center of Orihuela; 24,126 on the coast (Dehesa de Campoamor); and the remaining 23,657 in the 20 parishes of Murada, Saint Barthelemy, Los Desamparados, La Aparecida, and Torremendo.

According to the census of 2007, 37% of the population was of foreign nationality. Among nonnationals, 83.4% are of European origin. In the municipality of Orihuela, 14,203 residents and 10,610 British citizens are from other European countries, mostly the Spanish population of European countries.

Population distribution

The population pyramid of Orihuela is quite similar to the model of typical aging population in western developed countries, characterized by a narrow base (young people) and a large body (adult population) that is reduced with increasing age. This population structure is typical in modern demographic regime with a shift toward an aging population and declining birth year.
