In the economic life of the city’s major real estate speculation, in two decades Torrevieja has grown from a quiet village that the workers who came from other parts of the country or Europe would vacation at to a city where construction is a major factor of economic growth. These developments generated a population increase from the 13,000 residents recorded in the early ’80s to the over 100,000 today.

Health

Torrevieja is located in the public hospital district, run by private concession, the Department of Health 22 of the Valencian Health. Health centers are located in the Torrevieja districts of Guardamar del Segura, Pilar de la Horadada, and Rojales, covering the area to other towns such as San Fulgencio, Formentera del Segura, Benijofar, Campoamor ( Orihuela), San Miguel de Salinas, and Los Montesinos.

There is also the private hospital USP Hospital San Jaime.

The economic activity of citizens is based largely on tourism and residential services. It was formerly primarily fishing and salt industries from the lagoons of La Mata and Torrevieja.

Half a dozen boats fences, three trawlers, and a score of minor arts crafts are based in the bay of Torrevieja. Torrevieja’s lagoon is a major salt farm in Spain, with an average extraction of 600,000 tons per year.

These salt pans are in a good location to the sea through the port of Torrevieja. In contrast to other farms, the salt ponds sustain activity for most of the year. Until the mid-20th century salt was the main source of employment for city residents. A profound technological transformation has reduced staffing to about 160 people.
